I've been reading about the experiences this random guy has had while working in the Montana Conservation Corps, and it's got me all excited and brimming with plans and imaginings for the future.
First of all, about Americorps NCCC: there will be one more session starting early this July for the SE region of the US, based in Charleston, South Carolina. It's only budgeted at this point to last for six months, rather than the traditional 10-month NCCC term. Also, a lot of the planned service projects have been canceled to make room for a ton of Katrina relief work in hopes that some Katrina-related NCCC publicity will help save the program, and that much exhausting disaster relief work could mean getting burnt out, and at the same time, missing out on a variety of other service experiences. BUT, I think I'd like to try and do this one. I'm going to call early Monday morning and see if it's possible to switch over from the winter session I was accepted for to this SE session starting in July.
Spring until end of June:
Some casual job, I don't know, something fun away from the Willamette Valley area. Working at a lodge or ranch, volunteering on a farm or something to do with Natural Resources. I'd like to get a paying job with the Forest Service/Fish & Wildlife/National Parks etc., but I'm not sure if they have anything that ends as early as July.
July until late December 06:
NCCC in the SE. I'd get to travel all around in the South! And um Georgia is in the South ahem cough cough forget I said that. There is a possibility that this session could be extended for the full 10 months if funding is found to save NCCC.
If NCCC ended in December, next would be:
A year in a Conservation Corps, finally. Montana, Northern Arizona, and Utah all start in January and February.
-or-
If NCCC ended in April:
Good summer job with the Forest Service/Fish & Wildlife/National Parks etc. And/or, I could go for Nevada Conservation Corps, which starts in August.
Alternately,
If I can't switch to the July NCCC session, well then I'll keep working on getting a summer job, and then if NCCC is still around when I'm supposed to start next Winter, I'll do that, and if it's not still around, then I'll try and get into a Conservation Corps.
And that's that. I am very glad the weekend is finally here. Ahhh. So good.
